Are you looking to have a skin treatment procedure done?
This could either be for scars, enlarged pores, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, etc. Before you go ahead with your laser, microdermabrasion or chemical peel, you should definitely consider this safe and simple procedure with impressive results!
What is it you asked? It’s Medical Skin Needling AKA Collagen Induction Therapy.
Read on to find out what exactly is it and why should you consider this:
So what is Medical Skin Needling?
Skin needling is a safe and increasingly popular skin renewal technique to restore the healthy youthful appearance of your skin, get rid of scars, even out skin tone, etc.
What’s even better, it’s only a fraction of the cost of comparable treatments with minimal or zero downtime!
Skin needling produces comparable results to ‘ablative techniques’ such as lasers, dermabrasion and deep chemical peels. But it is much less invasive for your skin as it does NOT require the removal of your skin’s surface.
As a result, you’d have a shorter healing time and there is NO post-treatment sensitivity to UV light. This is very important. Why? Because we live in tropical Malaysia. Otherwise you might end up with Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) after your skin procedure…
How about other ‘non-ablative techniques’ then? Well, skin needling produces better results than these with virtually no pain or post-treatment discomfort.
Skin needling is also one of the few skin therapies that is suitable for treating all skin types, including darker skin and fragile skin around the eyes, mouth, hands and neck.
How does skin needling work its magic on your skin?
The concept of skin needling is based on your skin’s natural ability to repair itself. Think of that time when you had a cut or burn, how your skin naturally heals and repairs itself.
Immediately after an injury occurs, your body would remove the damaged collagen, elastin and other structures. And then replace them with new ones.
So what skin needling does is that it allows for controlled induction of your skin’s self-repair mechanism. This is done by creating micro-injuries which trigger new collagen synthesis. And since its a controlled process, it does NOT pose the risk of permanent scarring.
The result is that you get smoother, firmer and younger looking skin!
What results can I expect?
Visible signs of skin rejuvenation are usually seen after just a couple of weeks following the treatment and continue to improve for up to a year or more.
It’s recommended to have a minimum of 3 skin needling treatments, at 6 weeks interval to achieve optimum results.

What happens on the day?
- ANAESTHETISE – Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic will be applied to your skin to make it a virtually pain-free experience. It normally takes 45 minutes for the anaesthetic to numb the skin.
- PROCEDURE – The practitioner will then gently roll on your skin to create thousands of miniscule sub-cutaneous injuries. You will not feel any appreciable pain. The procedure usually lasts 20 minutes.
How will I look immediately after the treatment?
After the procedure, your skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a way that is similar to moderate sunburn. You will also experience tightness and mild sensitivity to touch.
The sensitivity will diminish greatly a few hours after the treatment and within the next 48 hours your skin will be completely healed, with barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.
How can I enhance the procedure results?
Prime your skin!
Skin priming should start 2 weeks before your procedure date. Skin priming ensures the best results from skin needling.
The use of stable vitamin C, vitamin A serums in the weeks before skin needling ‘jump-starts’ your skin’s process of collagen production, accelerating the benefits from treatment.
Medik8 has developed a range of products specifically for skin priming including highly stable vitamin C and vitamin A serums. If you’re prone to hyper-pigmentation or would like whiter skin, do add in a brightening serum such as White Balance Click into your skin priming program.
Proper aftercare post-treatment
This is the period where your skin heals and repairs itself. So naturally if you give it a boost now to help with healing and boosting collagen production, you’ll get a much better result!
As with skin priming, the use of stable vitamin C and vitamin A serums will help your skin rebuild collagen and elastin.
Your skin is most vulnerable post treatment (any treatment at all), so it’s vital that you use a gentle cleanser FREE from any AHA, BHA to allow it to heal properly without further irritation.
Another important aspect post-treatment is your skin’s hydration!
