Beauty myths and facts. What’s true and what’s not?
Go through beauty blogs or even pages of your favourite fashion/beauty magazines and you’ll be getting a ton of advice.
But surprisingly, a lot of them are inaccurate!
Scroll down to discover what are some of the myths and the truth behind them!
Myth 1: Hypoallergenic products are better for sensitive skin.
This term is usually used to imply that a particular product is less likely to cause allergic reactions. And therefore better for you if you have sensitive skin.
But the truth is, there are no accepted testing methods, regulation or ingredient restrictions in place to determine whether a product qualifies as being hypoallergenic!
So if you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, your best bet is to look through the ingredient list. Make sure that it is free of irritants. Some examples are synthetic fragrance, SLS, parabens, etc.
Myth 2: "Age spots" just happens as you get older.
“Age spots” or brown, freckle-like skin discolourations are not a result of age. Instead, they result from years of unprotected sun exposure.
The truth is sun spots can show up at any age!
Myth 3: You should always look for collagen and elastin in anti-wrinkle products.
Collagen and elastin could function as good water binding agents in your skincare.
However, the truth is they are usually too large to penetrate your skin. Even if they are small enough to be absorbed, they cannot bind with the existing collagen in your skin!
So what should you look for instead? Look for ingredients like retinol (vitamin A), vitamin C or peptides instead. These ingredients help to stimulate & increase your skin’s production of collagen and elastin. Thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Myth 4: Natural ingredients are always better for your skin than synthetic ones.
The media might have influenced you into thinking that natural ingredients are better for your skin. However there is simply no scientific basis for this belief.
The truth is the use of the term “natural” is loosely regulated. What’s more, just because an ingredient is found in nature does not make it good for your skin. And just because something is synthetic, that does not mean that it is automatically bad for your skin.
Instead, go for skincare products that are properly formulated. Whereby the ingredients (natural or otherwise) work in harmony to give you the best results. While at the same time, minimising any irritation to your skin.
Myth 5: It's good when products cause warm, tingling sensation
You might feel like your skincare product is working when it gives you some sort of warm or tingling sensation.
But the truth is this sensation is usually your skin telling you that it is being irritated.
When your skin responds to irritation, you might feel the familiar warm, tingling sensation. This usually causes inflammation and can actually damage your skin & cause collagen in your skin to break down.
Although your skin may not show it or give out an allergic reaction, if you constantly apply irritants to your skin, the damage adds up over time.
