What do you look for in your skin care?
With so many skin care products and brands out there, how do you choose what to go for? What are the 3 things you should look for in your skin care?
Scroll down to discover the 3 most important aspects in your skin care:
What is bioavailability?
Bioavailability (in skin care products) refers to the ability for the active ingredient to perform its function at where it’s intended to in your skin for optimal effect. In other words, it means the difference between you getting the results you want or no effect at all (or even worse irritation with no results).
And the bioavailability of your skin care is dependent on 3 main factors, the 3 D’s namely: Dose, Delivery and Depth:
- Dose – How much active ingredient is in the product? It is important that your skin care products have the right concentration of active ingredients for it to be truly beneficial. If it’s too little (common to cut cost), you might not get the effects you’re looking for. And if it’s too much (yes this happens too, for marketing reasons), this might affect the absorption of the active ingredients or even cause side effects.
- Delivery – How do the active ingredients get to their intended cellular target? This is where inactive ingredients come into play. These can include water, oil, stabilisers, emulsifiers, thickeners and preservatives, to name a few. While inactive ingredients don’t exert a specific action on skin, they do perform important functions in making skin care products effective.
- Depth – Can the ingredients reach your epidermal layer where they will be most effective? The molecular size and weight of active ingredient both play a crucial role in whether it can reach its target cells. Too large of a size results in the active ingredient sitting on the surface of your skin, preventing it from reaching the epidermal layer and doing its intended job. The condition of your skin can also hinder the active ingredients from penetrating deeply into your skin. Residue from makeup and sunscreen as well as dry skin cells can all create barriers and influence the efficacy of a product.
Why should you care about stability?
This is especially important in a hot and humid climate such as ours, things tend to oxidise and spoil way faster here. Definitely find out what the manufacturer is doing to ensure the stability of their skin care products. If the skin care you bought is already oxidised (spoilt) by the time it reaches you, then not only won’t it be effective, it is actually giving your skin unnecessary irritation!
Most people use cosmetics and other personal care items without a second thought, believing that the products in the market are generally safe. Most choose to focus more on the results (and how fast results can be seen). Yes results are definitely important, hence the 2 important factors to look for above. However so is safety!
