Did you know: Glycation is the largest cause of skin ageing after oxidation, triggered by internal factors as you age.
And how does your consumption of sugar and carbs fit into this? Is sugar wrecking your skin? Find out now..
What is glycation?
We all know that sugar and carbs increases our waistlines. But have you ever given a second thought to what it might do to your skin when reaching for that Red Velvet cake or Teh Tarik?
The idea of glycation is such: glucose (from carbohydrates and sugars) that you ingest attaches itself to proteins such as collagen in your skin and form new molecules called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. These AGEs degrade your skin’s collagen and elastin, causing them to harden and lose elasticity.
And what results on your face are wrinkles, sagginess and loss of radiance…
So what can you do about it?
The good news is that it’s never too late to rewind the biological clock for your skin.
Here are five steps that you can take today to keep ageing at bay:
1. Cut down on sugar
It’s hard to completely cut sugar from your diet, as even fruits and vegetables get turned into glucose. However, do try to limit and if possible cut added sugar.
Also, do avoid high fructose corn syrup as it’s believed that they wreck more damage to your skin than glucose. It’s widely used in processed foods because it’s cheaper and sweeter than sugar.
2. Eat more antioxidant rich foods
Antioxidant rich foods such as fruits, nuts and vegetables help you fight off free radicals and prevents sugar from attaching to proteins. Think colour when eating, include fruits and vegetables of different colour (i.e. red, yellow, green, purple, etc).
4. Wear broad spectrum sunscreen everyday
According to study conducted by British Journal of Dermatology, significantly more AGEs occur in sun-exposed than in protected skin. So especially in a hot tropical climate like ours, it’s important to wear SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen everyday!
5. Protect your skin from sugar with Anti AGEs ingredients
These ingredients work by attaching to molecules that causes glycation in your skin. This prevents them from binding to your collagen and elastin.
