Sometimes when you apply a skincare product, you might feel a tingling, warm sensation. You might think at least it seems to be doing something. However, more often than not, it’s a sign of irritation.
Truth is, irritation and inflammation are bad for your skin! This could results from applying skin care with harsh/irritating ingredients, unprotected sun exposure, hot water, etc.
What happens then is your skin’s surface weakens and its repair process becomes faulty. That’s not all, collagen in your skin also breaks down as a result of irritation!
And if you have oily skin, your skin actually copes with irritation by producing even more oil, leading to enlarged pores!
So the question is what can you do to keep skin irritation to a bare minimum?
Give your skin some TLC (tender loving care)
It’s best to treat your skin gently and with TLC. By doing so, you’d encourage normal collagen production, help your skin protect itself from environmental damage, regulate your skin’s oil production. This ultimately translate to a smoother, more radiant and youthful skin for you!
What should you avoid?
Besides treating your skin gently, you should also avoid the following to minimise any irritation to your skin:
- Overly abrasive scrubs (especially if the beads are uneven – as this causes micro tearing in your skin!)
- Astringents containing irritating ingredients (alcohol and menthol being the prime offenders)
- Toners containing irritating ingredients (alcohol and menthol being the prime offenders)
- Scrub mitts/ scrub nets
- Using facial brush too often
- Scrubbing too often
- Cold or hot water
- Steaming or icing the skin
- Bar soaps and bar cleansers
Any irritating skin care ingredients that you should avoid?
Here are a list of common skin care ingredients you should avoid. Also do notice where they appear in the ingredient list. It’s especially of concern if they appear in the beginning of the list or are among the first 10 ingredients listed.
- sulfates (i.e. sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), ammonium lauryl sulfate, etc)
- synthetic fragrances
- mineral oil
It's not possible to cut out irritation completely..
If you’ve noticed, I’ve only said to “cut down irritation” or “minimise irritation” in this post. Because the truth is, it is not possible to eliminate irritation completely. When it comes to skin care, every ingredient would inevitably cause some irritation, the difference is how much irritation it causes.
And especially when it comes to corrective skincare (i.e. anti aging, whitening, anti-pigmentation, treatment of acne, scars, etc), effective/ potent ingredients generally cause more irritation.
So what Medik8 strives to achieve is a balance between efficacy and minimal irritation. Medik8 products are formulated to deliver you the results while at the same time keeping irritation to a bare minimum.
Medik8 products are designed with green chemistry techniques that is kind to your skin and to the environment. At the same time, they contain the active ingredients in innovative delivery methods that have been scientifically proven to deliver you results!
