Do collagen drinks work? Or are they just a waste of your money?
Collagen is key to your healthy skin. And many companies have come up with collagen powder and drinks to supposedly boost your skin’s collagen levels.
But do they actually work? Does it actually convert to healthier, firmer skin?
Scroll down to discover all that and more!
First things first, what is collagen and why are they important?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It is the substance that holds your whole body together. Collagen is found throughout your body, i.e. bones, muscles, skin and tendons, where it forms a scaffold to provide strength and structure. Collagen together with keratin and elastin, keep your skin smooth, firm and youthful.
However as you age, the collagen in your skin slowly degrades. And at the same time, your skin’s production of collagen slows down. This results in the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and saggy skin.
What do these collagen powder and drinks claim to do?
Among the range of benefits that collagen supplements claim to offer are:
- Improve your skin elasticity
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
- Make you look youthful
- Tightens your skin
- Plumps up your skin
However, do they deliver on their promises?
The truth is, there is little to no evidence that these collagen supplements can deliver what they claim.
First, what needs to happen for these to work? These collagen molecules would have to survive your body’s digestion, make it into your bloodstream and somehow reach your skin. And that’s not the end of it, it’s all based on the assumption that these molecules CAN increase your skin’s production of collagen!
These collagen supplements do however provide your body with proteins (both essential and non-essential ones). Some even have added vitamins, minerals which would help support your body’s healthy functioning.
If your day to day diet is lacking in these nutrients then taking collagen supplements (be it in powder, drink or pill form) should definitely help.
That said though, do look through the ingredient list in your collagen supplement. Try to avoid added sugars (these causes glycation – ages your skin), fillers (like maltodextrin, etc) and additives.
So instead what could you do to look younger?
At the end of the day, your best bet maybe to lead a healthy lifestyle (yes healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise) and regularly apply suncreen! This should help slow down the degradation & loss of collagen and help you look younger than your age!
