Do you often find your face looking ‘shiny’ and resembling an oil slick?
You’d know by now how hard it is to get oily skin under control.. Especially with the hot and humid Malaysian weather.
Today, we’ll be covering the steps that you should take to care for oily skin.
So what are they and how to prevent your oily skin from getting worse? Scroll down to find out now:
Go through your current skin care routine
Before anything else, you look through your current skin care routine. Look out for any ingredients that are drying or irritation. They might provide your skin with temporary relief (makes your skin less oily), however in the long run, it’ll make your skin condition worse.
What happens is your skin respond to drying and irritating ingredients by producing more oil!
Certain ingredients (like menthol, mint, etc) might make your skin tingle or make your skin feel tighter (alcohol). However when you get the tingling sensation, more often than not, it’s your skin telling you that its being irritated. It might not seem to damage your skin at first but over a long period the damage adds up.
Now we'll get to the actual skin care routine for oily skin.
You might be tempted to use a harsh cleanser for oily skin, instead you should go for one that is relatively gentle. This is because when a harsh cleanser strips your skin of its natural oils, your skin would respond by producing even more oil. Your cleanser should rinse without leaving any residue however at the same time should not contain drying cleansing agents (for e.g. sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), soap, etc).
If you’re looking for a good cleanser for oily, combination or problematic skin, you could consider Medik8 poreCleanse Gel. It is FREE from sulfates, soap, paraben and other harsh chemicals. Instead it contains gentle forms of AHA and BHA to help with micro exfoliation and regulates your skin’s sebum production.
Exfoliation is often overlooked. However it’s a very important step, especially if you’ve got oily skin. The reason is because, oily skin usually has a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface and clogged pores (which leads to your pores looking enlarged).
And you’ve guessed it, the best way to remove that layer of dead skin and unclog your pores is to exfoliate regularly (at least once a week).
One of the best ingredients for exfoliation is salicylic acid (BHA). It helps to exfoliate deep into your pores, helping to unclog your pore and prevent whiteheads and blackheads.
And if you’re looking for a good scrub, look no further than Medik8 Pore Refining Scrub. It is a dual action scrub with both physical exfoliating particles, plus both AHA (L-Mandelic acid) and BHA (salicylic acid) hydroxy acids. This all-in-one facial scrub gently sloughs-off and polishes away your dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and soft.
3. Sun protection in the day
Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin (from premature ageing and sun damage). And yes, it applies even if you have oily skin. You might have stayed away from sunscreen as they cause your skin to be sticky and even greasier. If this is the case, you might want to try out Medik8 White Balance Day. It’s lightweight and provides you with SPF 50 broad spectrum sun protection.
4. Hydration at night
Even if you have oily skin, do not forget about hydration! Go for a lightweight hydrator in either liquid or serum form. Make sure that it does not contain anything that can clog your pores.
You could consider Medik8 Hydr8 B5 to keep your skin hydrated.
